About me
I am an Associate Professor in the Pediatrics Division of the Faculty of Medicine at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, and the founder and Executive Director of the Down Syndrome Center, which belongs to the same institution.
I trained as a physician and specialized in Pediatrics at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, where I have pursued my career as a specialist clinician in complex care. Since 2006, I have been shaping the Health Follow-up Program for children and adolescents with Down syndrome, as part of the Unit for Children and Adolescents with Special Health Needs.
This program currently monitors over 1800 children and adolescents with Down syndrome nationwide and is led by a team consisting of 5 pediatricians and 1 nurse. Over the years, I have conducted clinical research in the field of healthcare for children with Down syndrome.
In 2012, I developed the project for an interdisciplinary center, composed of academics from various faculties of our University, which materialized in the establishment of the Centro UC sindrome de Down [Down Syndrome Center]. I have been leading this center since its inception, and it has become a national and Latin American reference in Down syndrome-related topics, covering physical and mental health, as well as education, cognitive development, and psychosocial aspects.
At the Down syndrome Center, I lead a team of 22 professionals from the fields of health, psychology, education, arts, and social sciences. Together, we pursue interdisciplinary research lines focused on Down syndrome.
