Special Olympics provides grass-roots, community-based sports training and competition opportunities, as well as a variety of health, education, youth-centric and leadership development activities designed to use the power of sport to promote the personal and social development of participating individuals and to challenge negative stereotypes and social marginalization of people with ID. In short, it harnesses the transformative power of sport to help advance social, economic and human development for all. The movement which was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver now consists of over 200 accredited Programs operating in 190 countries and jurisdictions.
